Thank you for your interest in adopting a dog from Okandogs!

Our primary location is just a few miles east of Leavenworth, WA in the city of Cashmere. Our adoption process is detailed and comprehensive because we want to ensure that the dog we entrust to you is a good fit for your lifestyle and home environment. Our goal is to create lasting, rewarding, happy relationships between our dogs and their humans. We will process your application as quickly as we can, but we ask you to be patient if it takes longer than you expect.

Please review the information below prior to completing an adoption application.

If you are interested in a particular dog or litter, please complete an application prior to scheduling a time to visit. PLEASE DO NOT CALL BEFORE COMPLETING AN APPLICATION. Filling out an application does not commit you to taking the dog, nor does it guarantee that an adoption will follow. It simply allows us to start the dialogue as to whether the dog and your living situation are a good match.

Adoption Requirements

A fully fenced yard, appropriate to the size of the dog, is a requirement. However, exceptions can be made with a clear and reasonable plan in place, depending on the dog. You will also need a daily plan that supports potty training, socializing and bonding time. If you adopt a puppy that is not spayed or neutered, it will be your contractual responsibility to have this done by the date indicated on your contract. This is non-negotiable and is a requirement of your adoption agreement. We will follow-up with you and your vet to confirm that all required vet services have been performed.

Meet and Greet

If the dog that you are interested in is still available and the information that you supply in your application indicates that you would be a good fit, we will contact you to schedule a meet and greet with the pup at our location in Cashmere. If you don’t hear back from us, it does not mean that you are not a qualified adopter. The dog may have already been adopted or is in the process of being adopted. If the profile has been removed from Petfinder, the adoption has been completed.

It is REQUIRED that ALL members of the household, adults, children and dogs, with whom the adoptable dog will reside, attend the meet and greet. The meet and greet is for the dog’s benefit as well as the family’s. We need to observe that the dog is comfortable and appropriate with all family members to assure the best possible outcome. If this is not possible, let us know so that we can discuss.

Bringing Your New Pup Home!

Assuming that we have received a fully completed application and are able to pre-check the references provided, the dog may be able to go home at the end of the adoption day meet and greet. If we have not been able to contact references, we can only hold the dog for 24 hours, at which time the dog may be adopted to another applicant who has completed the process.

If all goes well, we will review the information in the adoption contract together and sign. We take an adoption photo which we may post to Facebook with the adopter’s permission. The dog is then released to go home with you and our hope is that all live a long and happy life together!

CANADIAN RESIDENTS: Due to the difficulty involved in enforcing a spay/neuter contract internationally, we do not allow unaltered dogs to leave the United States. Unfortunately, this prohibits Canadian residents from adopting a young puppy. This restriction does not apply to altered dogs and we gladly accept applications from Canadian residents for our altered dogs.

ADOPTION FEES (note: these fees are not guaranteed and may change at any time)

Dogs one year of age and older - $150 plus reimbursement for any spay or neuter expenses, if the dog was not altered when admitted. Typical cost for either procedure is $225.00-275.00. The dog will also have received all current vaccinations and be microchipped. The microchip cost is $25 and registration is prepaid.

Puppies – adoption fee ranges from $200.00-$350, and could be higher if the puppy is a purebred. If a puppy is less than 6 months of age, it will not be altered prior to adoption. For these young pups, we enter into a spay/neuter contract with the adopter backed by a $250.00 deposit check. When we receive confirmation that the procedure has been completed, the check is destroyed or donated, per your preference. Most shelters spay/neuter at two months of age. We believe that it is beneficial to wait for up to an additional four months, giving time for the pup to grow and develop. Some vets may suggest that the surgery be delayed for a year or more. This is not an option for us and is contrary to our mission.  The six-month commitment to alter is a contractual obligation and should be seriously considered prior to adopting.

If you want to move forward with adopting an Okandogs dog, please complete the Adoption Application.
